Why does shaking a jar half filled with hot water increase the pressure in the jar?

If I half fill a jar with hot water and close it and leave it for a short time, not much happens when I open the jar.  But if I close the jar and shake it vigorously, when I open the jar there is a lot of pressure built up in there.  Why does shaking the jar do this?

Lottery and Birthday Probabilities

How many lottery tickets would have to be bought for there to be a >=50% probablility that every single possible combination has been chosen?  Or for smaller numbers how many people would you need in a room for there to be a >=50% probability that every day of the year is one or more of these people's birthdays?

If these numbers are too large then how many people/tickets would be needed that there is a >=50% probability that >=50% of the lottery tickets/birthdays have been chosen?

Assume that birthdays and lottery tickets are chosen at random and not bunched, and forget about leap years to keep things slightly simpler.

Out of the blue

I washed some apples and served them on a hand-carved soapstone platter (see photo). When we began to eat them, we noticed the apples had left blue stains on the plate. What could have caused this?

How do sailors in a sinking submarine meet their fate?

I've heard from a rather dubious source that the poor souls aboard a sinking submarine succumb neither from being crushed nor from drowing, but rather from burning. Is this true? and if so why?

Help needed on bread mold

I require any answers ASAP. I am performing a lab experiment on bread molds and the rate of reproductivity level of the mold. What would be the best conditions for it to grow the fastest and maximize it's area, using the four variables of light, water (moisture), heat/temperature, and nutrients?
