Why is the moon brighter now then sometimes?

At the moment in Scotland, the moon is incredibly bright at night, much more so than it is usually, even during a usual full moon.  Why is this?

I assume that the brightness of the moon is based on the angle of the earth, moon and sun, but if so then what is the critical angles to get the brightest moon possible?  When will this next occur?

Does mass exists?

I just watch a documentary about the nature of reality (horizon) there seems to be allot of excitement about the Higgs boson that apparently holds the key to mass. however I think I read somewhere that as a you approach the speed of light you gain mass and I'm sure iv read about mass being gained because of energy. does this no suggest that there is no such thing as mass and in fact mass does not exist and is just a measure of energy?

an Atmosphere on mars?

I finished reading a science fiction book series, and it was based on mars, where they were developing carbon dioxide generators to realase the gas into the air to create a thicker and sutainable enviroment to go out onto the surface without a space suit. Is this/ could this be theoretically possible?

how would aliens be?

is it necessary that the "aliens" or "ET" we are looking for necessarily carry the same body functions like we do? we are carbon based maybe they could be something entirely different. (question  comes coz in a newspaper article i read that we should be  looking for "earth like planets".)

What is the best estimate of (A) the number of grains of sand on Earth and (B) the number of stars in the Universe (this one!)?

We very often read that the Universe has more stars than there are grains of sand on Earth.  Is this quantitatively demonstrable or mere hyperbole?

Would we see the Betelgeuse supernova explosion 640 years after it happens?

I heard recently that the star Betelgeuse is predicticted to approach supernova within the next million, or possibly just 1000 years. Am I right in thinking we wont' actually see this until 640 years after it has happened? I know it will be visible but will there be any effects on the Earth? Just need to satisfy my curiosity and hope it happens in my lifetime!
