Do you like this transformer neutral resistor idea to mitigate solar storm damage?

As I understand it... normally, There's a direct connection to ground. (no resistors)

The storm induces current along the length of the overhead wires. Click on the diagram

This complete loop of wires and ground, would be "mitigated", with resistors as shown.

Geo-magnetic storms can shut down the power grid.

"But to just shut the grid off and restart it is a $10 billion proposition"

What creates the silver lining around clouds?

"Every cloud has a silver lining." is a common proverb, but what actually causes the edges of the clouds to shine (the silver lining bit)?

Thanks,

Lana

Where is the best palce for a telescope?

In SA Sutherland to be precise we have an observatory, i asked why is it there and say not in the middle of the Free state, i was told it is in Sutherland because it is seismically one of the quietest places on earth, What does this mean?? do they mean there is never any earthquakes? if so surely there are many other possible places in SA it could have gone.

Why does the sun rise and set at seemingly illogical times?

If for example, sunrise today here in NY, was 5 hours prior to noon, then why wouldn't sunset be exactly 5 hours after noon?

New York City

Sunrise: 7:00am

Sunset: 5:21pm (why isn't that 5 pm?) a 21 min difference.

On the longest day of the year... June 21 the difference is smaller

Sunrise: 5:25am  standard time would be 4:25 am

Sunset: 8:31pm standard time would be 7:31 pm

7 hrs 35 mins before noon 7 hrs 31 mins after noon. A 4 min difference.

What day would the difference from noon be equal, if not on June 21st?

Or would a city have to be chosen for it's position in it's time zone for this difference from noon to be equal?

Big Stick

As a child i have always wondered that if you had a big stick that was 10 miles long and you turned it 360 degrees. how many miles an hour would the end of the stick be traveling because it would be covering a vast amount of space in little time. for example if you was holding one side of the stick. the side you are holding would not be traveling fast but the other end would be in theory? how can that make sence?
