What causes the concentric rings found on some puddles?

I've noticed that some freeze dried puddles, have a series of circles on them, like a weather map and wondered what could cause them.

Why does the air appear crisp and clear, and the clouds look like torn white bread, when rain is imminent?

Likewise why is the air hazy and clouds melt into one another as well as appear more diffuse?

Bi-directional winds ?

The two trails of cirrus cloud seem to show that there is wind travelling in opposite directions, and are very cleanly separated - is this likely ?

Home Grown ice columns?

During a prolonged cold spell during this year's winter in the UK, I noticed some unusual ice crystals which appeared to be "growing" out of a stone in the garden (attached picture).  The temperature had been below 0 degrees for about 10 days but most of the frost had gone from the other stones around this particular one.

The height of the ice crystals was around 1 cm with the overal size of the stone around 5 cm although the ice covering was very patchy.  Could a porous stone create this effect when the water inside freezes and is forced out of the pores...?

calculating tides

Is there a reliable method to calculate the times of strongest and weakest gravitational pull of the moon upon objects at a specific location on earth, in effect a high and low tide? We considered using tide times, but they factor in variables such as ocean currents and coastal flows, which would adversly affect our results. Is there a formula that can give us a good answer?
