Why are my bees bursting into flames?

I'm a keen amateur apiarist however the last few times I've visited my hives I've noticed a very disturbing trend in some of my livestock that I'm hoping someone here may be able to assist me with. I'd read somewhere that a low amperage current applied to a hive acts as a catalyst to increase honey production and also provides some uniqueness to the flavour. Being of open mind I decided to try this out and, for a time, I was harvesting more from my hives than I've ever done. After a while I saw that honey production was dropping back down to average levels and the quality of the honey was also suffering so I thought I'd test the boundaries of my newly implemented improvement and increased the amount of current I'd been applying. Again, honey production increased, however, every now and then I'd see what appeared to be seriously disorientated bees flying into my bedroom walls and combusting in a small shower of sparks. To add some context to these comments I should also mention that I keep my hives under my bed and have drilled small holes in my walls for the bees to exit and enter as they please. So my question is around how it's possible for an insect to store sufficient charge in its body that it self destructs on impact with a solid surface. I would have thought that this amount of electrical energy would have killed the insect long before any inherent capacitive qualities kicked in.

How are magnetic "healing" items meant to work?

A family member recently bought her dog (working class bearded collie)  Norstar "biomagnetic dog collar" which supposedly "increases energy, brings relief to pain and generally improves health and well being".

I have also seen similar items in sports magazines for use on people with similar effects.

My question is how do these items work, that is if they actually produce an effect on people/animals

Last Word weekly roundup for Friday 13 August

Most people can remember little from before the age of 3, but do "photographic" memories start earlier? And are the earliest photographic memories retained fully formed, unlike fragmented normal memories? Help Laex find an answer

Flies are not known for having long memories, which could be why they seem never to tire of flying into windows. Ben12!? would like to know why they don't appear to do themselves any damage when they do this at high speed.

Most memories fade or get corrupted over time, but our sense of time passing is highly variable and little understood. jamie534 is interested in whether the way we measure time affects the way we perceive its passing.

Our brazen attempt to make memory and time the theme of the week runs into the sand with the next question  though there is a never-ending quality to housework: Alexa’s father insists it's harder to wash up in cold water, but she reckons the temperature of the water makes no difference. So which of them is right?.

Finally, remember when you used to write things on paper? Have you ever wondered whether the direction of a writing script indicates the "handedness" of those who invented it? Help grannybuttons answer this intriguing question.

Why do injured birds cry out when you pick them up?

I have often had cause to retrieve injured birds over the years. In almost every case they screech when I pick them up. Is this because A: They're terrified. B: They're hoping to startle the predator (me) enough to give them a chance to escape. C: They're hoping to attract help from mate or parent. D: They're trying to warn others of their species. Or is there an E?

Does any species of bee pee?

While working as a postman I saw a bee sitting on the outside step of a building. It was a large bee and as I looked it rose up in a spiral and directly under it a small stream of fluid traced the spiral pattern onto the doorstep. Since then I've been wondering if a bee can pee.

Do dogs have names for each other?

Dogs seem to understand the concept of 'names' more than other animals.  My dogs know the names of the cats and recognise their own names.  Does this mean that they have a similar system themselves or merely associate the sound with the image?

I can understand how sound + image works in the case of the cats names for example, not sure how it would be applied to their own name though.
