Sometimes, when hill walking, I have taken horrible, disabling cramp in my thigh muscles. I discovered that a drink of water with a tiny pinch of table salt provides a miraculous cure almost instantly. I assume that a lot of sweating leaves your body with a low sodium level.

The kind of cramp that twists and contorts your toes into weird shapes (especially when it's cold) seems to be a different beast altogether and can usually be overcome by stretches.

Quinine (found in tonic water) was always said to be good at helping cramps in the legs. However, I heard from someone recently that this was a false claim...

Anyone read anything to support/disprove this?

cramp is caused when muscles are starved of oxygen and resort to anaerobic respiration..the by product of this is Lactic Acid rather than Carbon dioxide which is by product of AEROBIC respiration..it's this build up of lactic acid that causes the pain.. the best thing to do is Take deep breaths or even pant..in order to get oxygen to the muscles  and position the limb so that circulation is not impeded
