Pretty in pink

Why are girls, and particularly young girls, drawn to the colour pink? Is it something society has instilled in them? Or is there something attractive about the colour itself? Shops seem to be full of pink clothes for young girls - are they reacting to demand or just forcing their designs upon children who would not otherwise choose this colour?Anna Garrard, London, UK(Image: kirsche222, stock.xchng)

I hated pink as a young girl. I don't know if it was a tomboy thing or just the color, but it wasn't until I was in my late teens and early twenties until I started wearing it. I love it now, but as much as I love turquoise or green. I think it is foisted upon little girls.I like the comment about fruit and gathering though. Interesting to think about.

I think there's so little choice these days that most of them are forced/brainwashed into it.http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/mar/29/familyandrelationships.family1If little boys used to be dressed in pink, and if the pink obsession is not universal (do little Chinese or Kenyan girls all go mad for pink too?) then it seems unlikely to be inbuilt.

I love wearing pink. I just feel extremely comfortable in it. Sure, I wear also orange, green and purple, but I really prefer pink. And I started liking it in my late teens. Before, I liked very much wearing blue, now I can wear it only on jeans. I think the choice of color has more to do with personality than with something else.Maybe they make little girls wear pink, because this is a sweet and tender color and it emphasis their own sweetness (or in a way, they are making the girls be sweet and nice). In any case, the colors provoke different moods and attitudes and for example I wear it, because it calms me down and cheers me up :) It's more a psychological thing-you wear what you need to strengthen in you.

I hated pink as a small girl (fortunately, I have a younger brother and my mum was recycling my clothes on him, so I didn't have many pink clothes :-)). I still don't like it on myself because I feel it makes me look childish.
