Taste tribulation

This is a question that my husband, Jon Richfield, cannot answer to my satisfaction. I find the taste of certain common spices quite horrible. The nasty flavour I get from all of them seems, to me, quite similar. The spices that taste this way are aniseed, caraway, cumin, fennel and coriander. Tarragon, cardamom and capers also taste awful in the same way.I wonder if there is a food scientist who knows what they have in common, or what my aversion might be. I should add that I am not a fussy eater in general.Bess Richfield, Somerset West, South Africa

well...cumin, anis seed, fennel, caraway are all part of the same plant family (Apiaceae) which means they share similar essential oils. You simply don't like one or more components of these essential oils.the other three are little bit weird beause different categories. Cardamon is related to ginger and turmeric so i wonder whether you have the same "tasty problem" with them? The same for Tarragon and Capers. If you like to know check the components of these plants and see whether you find similar chemical substances... xx

I have a question similar to that posed by Bess Richfield. All nuts taste the same to me - horrible. People who eat nuts tell me that they all taste differently. Is the answer to this question the same as that for Bess's question, or is this another question that Jon Richfield cannot answer?Tony HolkhamPetersfield

I share the anis-cumin-fennel-aversion (anis seeds being the worst), but coriander and capers areok for me (though i don't like tarragon, but this is just a disliking). I have also an aversion for camomille, and I learned that camomille intolerance coincides with ambrosia allergy (which I suffer from, living in central Europe)

Yes, I have an aversion to fresh coriander - to me it smells like those plant bugs that leave a disgusting smell on your fingers if you pick them up. I like the other spices mentioned.
