Could we record key historical events by sending cameras into space?

If a camera was placed 1 light year away from Earth with a high enough definition, could it be used to spy on events that took place on Earth one year ago? And, if so, could this technique be used to record our past by sending an array of such cameras to the appropriate distance in order to capture momentous events in Earth's history?

technically yes, but by the time your camera got into position (assuming light speed travel this is 1 year) you would just be capturing images from 1 year ago relative to the camera so the first images you would be able to capture would start at the point in time you first launched the camera.

and then you would have a delay of 1 year to get the images back resulting in it taking 2 years to get photos of the day you launched it...

pointless
