Pretty in pink

Why are girls, and particularly young girls, drawn to the colour pink? Is it something society has instilled in them? Or is there something attractive about the colour itself? Shops seem to be full of pink clothes for young girls - are they reacting to demand or just forcing their designs upon children who would not otherwise choose this colour?Anna Garrard, London, UK(Image: kirsche222, stock.xchng)

It's something that society and particularly their mothers have instilled in them. The shops are both reacting to this demand and forcing this colour apon young girls. They don't have to be mutualy exclusive. Interestingly, the Victorians used to clothe boys in pink. The big change over happened in the early 1900's. For reasons best left to fashion designers.

It may have to do with females gathering foods throughout our evolutionary history. Red fruits denote ripeness and pink ones would be a resource that is almost ripe. It can also reflect sexual signalling.

As a male I must admit I find girls wearing pink more attractive than if they wearing another color.

I believe it has something to do with the light reflected from the garments having an aesthetically pleasing effect on the appearance of the complexion of the wearer in much the same way that a red light is favoured by certain establishments.
