My 4-year-old daughter asked me how high butterflies fly. I was stumped. Can anyone tell us?

i've seen them outside a 40th storey office building window, which would mean somethink like 600 feet - but there could have been updrafts, so the elevation may be fortuitous, rather than deliberate.

The Monarch butterfly is known to reach 11,000 feet when migrating. Observations of the Monarch have been made by glider pilots at this altitude. Airline pilots flying between 10,000 and 13,000 feet have also reported seeing them.

airline pilots must have very sharp eyesight to spot a monarch butterfly while cruising at 10-13,000 ft...

Hard to spot a single butterfly at 10,000 ft but pretty easy to spot a migrating swarm of a million butterflies.

It's a migratory cloud, in reality it's hard to miss. (Jumbos have window wipers, right?)
