I've just seen a sword-swallowing act. Swords, seemingly longer than the depth from throat to anus were swallowed. It has to be a trick, doesn't it? If it is, what's the trick? If it isn't, what's going on?
Was the handle of the sword that was swallowed particularly long? Were they Japanese Samurai-style handles?I am given to understand that in acts of this nature, the sword blade is on a spring or catch mechanism and part of the blade (1/3 if the handle is quite long) slides up into a cavity in the handle thus drastically reducing the swallowed length. It is an optical illusion because it IS impossible to swallow an actual sword that is longer than Throat-to-anus - there MUST be some slight-of-hand or trickery involved.
New scientist recently did an interesting article on the art of sword swallowing which included some interesting links. There are a few likely answers to the question, 1 the sword was a fake designed to collapse.2 The sword was real, the performer genuinely swallowed it and it was an optical illusion that it appeared too long .http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2009/02/a-taste-of-the-science-of-swor.html
If it actually was longer than thier body then yes it will have been a folding sword that folds on contact with say the back of the the throat like gimmick halloween knifes.Real sword swallowers need to overcome their gag reflex as the epiglotis needs to remain open. It requires precision placement as it is placed behind the pharynxdown the oesphagus between the lungs and contiues till it reaches the bottom of the stomach. For more see http://www.swordswallow.com/faq.php
The distance between the mouth and the anus is a lot bigger than the linear distance you see from outside the body.In all, it's impossible to swallow a sword for more than a few inches/centimers because it would damage the intestines.
