Shampoo pooh-pooh

I have just read the label on my shampoo bottle. The list of ingredients is mind-boggling. How on earth did anyone come up with such a complex concoction and what exactly are chemicals such as sodium diethylene-triamine pentamethylene phosphonate and hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde doing to my hair?

the magazine Wired has had a series of one-page articles about the contents of common household products. I throw out my back issues, so I can't give you a reference for shampoo. Trust me, there are explanations for everything on the list of ingredients, although some are there just to be different from the competition.

I suggest you go to the website of the Environmental Working Group and check out their information about the many harmful ingredients in cosmetics and toiletries--including shampoo. This is the most comprehensive analysis I've seen.PS: You are right to be concerned! But the EWG website can also point you to safer products.

My scalp became increasingly sensitive to virtually any shampoo to the extent that I needed treatment. Then I discovered Thursday Plantation tea tree shampoo. It has the minimum of ingredients and is really effective. No problems whatsoever for the last 6 years.

What is it doing to my hair? Nothing at all. I have not used shampoo for about 40 years. I found that rinsing in the shower and deep brushing - down to the scalp - was all I needed to keep my hair clean. Now, aged almost 60, I don't have much hair left. But I look just like my dad did (and my son is going the same way) so I don't think it's due to lack of shampoo.Body soap and shampoo may have been necessary before we had easily available hot showers, but I think the only reason to buy them now is to maintain the cosmetics industry.
