Fly trap?

When my family returned from a two-week holiday during the summer, we found a cluster of dead flies stuck to our porch window. Each was surrounded by a hazy mist on the glass.

We have lived in our house for 20 years and we have never seen this before. Even after two weeks, when the photograph was taken, nothing had changed. The flies hadn't moved and no predator had come to eat them. Can anyone explain what has happened?

Maybe the mist is caused by the cold bodies of the flies cooling warm air from in the house which is creating condensation on the window. It could be that when you had returned from holiday, the flies had already been dead for a significant amount of time and dried up which would make them undesirable prey as there is no nourishment left in them. As to why they all collected at the porch window, the only thing that i can think of is that they were trying to get in the house where the temperature was warm.

I have seen similar mistiness around dead flies on glass and I believe it is a fungus of some kind. Sometimes you can see a web of threads. Whether it kills the flies, or merely grows on their dead bodies, I don't know.

There are quite some fungi that prey on insects. They can even grow on living, flying insects, covering them with white, hairy stuff. My guess is that the flies got infected and died on the window, and the mist is just the fungus growing spores.
