Itches that move

On scratching an itch the itch seems if it is moving away from the area being scratched, thus causing you to chase it with your scratching. Why does the itch move?

You may be one of the quarter or quint of humans suffering from a 'referred itch' or Mitempfindung, where scratching an itch makes another one pop up elsewhere on the body. (Kind of like pushing down too large a carpet in a room.) However, I can't help you with the why. This is just one of the great mysteries!

A paper on the phenomenon may be read here.
