What was the lunar occurrence I witnessed?

Just over a week ago, while camping near Sorrento, I watched the sun set.  Shortly after, the moon rose. No big deal. However, after a few minutes the moon shifted over to the right slightly and began to turn a bright red colour- it then proceeded to sink, until it dissapeared back down behind the horizon. I have never seen this before and am wondering what I saw.

If something had knocked the moon out of its orbit the news would have been full of it at the very least! So it can't have REALLY gone down again.

I can think of two explanations:

1) This was not the moon. A sky lantern?

2) If it was the moon anyway: The right shift is normal, you really see it every time the sun, moon or a star rises in the northern hemisphere. Especially at high degrees and in winter they move much more to the right than up!

The red was probably caused by some change in the atmosphere, clouds etc.

The moon cannot have gone down again but maybe it looked like it when it disappeared behind a hill?
