Rate constant

The adsorption rate constant of Pb(II) on acid activated clay (pH ~ 4) is less than the adsorption rate constant of Pb(II) on the raw clay (pH ~ 8). Why? Is there any relation between the surface acidity of the clay and rate constant? Surface area of acid activated clay is more than that of raw clay.

Hmm, not really a 'science of everyday things' question - sounds more like a homework problem for a chemistry class!
