Neanderthal man, These hominids were wide spread in Europe and western Asia. When theories of human evolution picked up steam, many accepted Neanderthals as the ancestors of modern Europeans. This belief was ultimately disproved by mitochondrial DNA research on the original set of neanderthal bones. The 40,000-year-old DNA sequence identified Neanderthals as a species distinct from humans.
