How dark is it at the outer planets?

I've just been looking at some of the pictures voyager took of Uranus and Neptune. If I'd gone along for the ride would I have been able to enjoy the view with my unaided eyes, or is it quite gloomy so far from the sun? Could I read my newspaper on Pluto?

Jon-Richfield says:

Pluto is roughly 40 times further from the sun than we are.  This implies something like 1600 time less sunlight than we get. You had better read your newspaper with a photomultiplier.  Also better make sure that you keep it warm; at Pluto's ambient temperatures newspaper is likely to shatter if you try to pick it up.

Sorry about the cold comfort. There are compensations to terrestrial global warming...

Cheers,

Jon
