Why do tummies rumble?

I notice that at random times my stomach rumbles unexpectedly... what is actually going on down there and why is it happening?

It's the hydrochloric acid and pepsins trying to digest your food. If you eat something basic, (has a pH higher then 8) then it might be that neutralising the acid, and your stomach trying to make more acid to digest your food.

Just a guess.

It depends on where you believe your stomach to be, many people believe its  just above the naval, but alas just like your heart its near the centre towards the bottom of the rib cage.  If you are rumbling further down then you have wind whooshing around your intestines towards the exit.

Your stomach rumbles all the time take a stethoscope and listen to your stomach it will sound similar but very faint to a washing machine on a slow wash cycle, but can be heard more and louder when your hungry.  The rumble is called Borborygmi which get its name from the sound which is stomach muscles contracting and whooshing gases and acids mixing waiting for the next food intake, which can be triggered by a number of senses.
