If a hole were dug right through the earth and an object were dropped into it would it come to a halt at the centre of the earth

disregarding the heat etc would gravity hold the object suspended at the centre of the earth

Yes: eventually. Initially it would accelerate until it reached the center, and then decelerate. If the hole contained a vacuum it would travel back and forth almost indefinitely. In practice (??) resistance would slow it down on each swing, until it came to a halt at the center.
