What is the Scientific Name of this reptile/ gecko?

This is a common gecko sort of an animal we find in India. I have seen these scamper among trees. The local name for these reptiles is the same as that for a chameleon. When I was trying to describe the creature to a friend I suddenly realised I did not know what it was actually called.

That lizard is a species in the family Agamidae. Chameleons belong to the family Chamaelionidae.

Whilst I am no expert in the group, I will make a guess that it is in the genus Calotes. And if I had to hazard a guess further, I would suggest that it might be Calostes versicolor. It is also likely a male of the species. These lizards can also exhibit colour change (albeit slower and not as extensive as chameleons), and so grouping them with chameleons is not unexpected.

However, I would recommend that you use my suggestion only as a starting point, and look further in local books, universities or museums. Good luck with your search. And please report back if you get a positive identification.
