Perhaps you wake up enough to realise just how impaired you are.

Or, perhaps it's the quick change in environment from pub to street.

I've always thought that fresh air did me good after drinking.

The cool air and oxygen will be absorbed into your blood stream via the lungs. This sudden ammount of oxygen in the bloodstream increases the already alcohol saturated blood flow around your body ie to the brain and opens up the veins and arteries allowing faster flow. Obviously the more alcohol reaching the brain the more you will feel the effects.
