If the latter, many commercial products, like Drano, contain aluminum chips. The reaction between them and the sodium hydroxide produces a lot of heat (and hydrogen), which aids in destroying the clog when combined with the strong caustic action of the sodium hydroxide.  (no votes) Tags: draincleaner, sodiumhydroxide.

It says on the label contains sodium hydroxide, but that doesn't mean to say it does not contain anything else. After careful examination of the granules I can now see they do indeed contain aluminium. Nothing magical after all but at least I know know the answer.
