Magically appearing metal

I have a tub of sodium hydroxide granules for use as a drain cleaner. When I poured some into a small amount of water in my sink, small splinters of a silver metal magically appeared. At first I thought it must be a reaction with the chrome plated plug hole. However, I get the same reation if i just pour some in a glass of tap water. The splinters are hard and metalic and appear to be aluminium. What on earth is going on here?

Did you buy sodium hydroxide, or drain cleaner? If the former, then there should be no metallic particles. If the latter, many commercial products, like Drano, contain aluminum chips. The reaction between them and the sodium hydroxide produces a lot of heat (and hydrogen), which aids in destroying the clog when combined with the strong caustic action of the sodium hydroxide.

Right first time! It is indeed drain cleaner I bought. It says on the label contains sodium hydroxide, but that doesn't mean to say it does not contain anything else. After careful examination of the granules I can now see they do indeed contain aluminium. Nothing magical after all but at least I know know the answer. Thank you!

The Drano can "used" to say that the aluminum particles were calculated to terminate the corrosive action as to not damage the pipes if left forgotten.
