Why do humans have art?

There seems to be no reason to suggest that a creative mind can help us survive in nature.

That is an extremely arguable statement. I cannot see how you would defend it. Creativity helps creatures in nature, all the way from parrots and crows using tools and learned signals, to singers, poets, demagogues, priests, and artists pulling the birds, constructing shelters, planting gardens, or designing bombs.

I strongly urge you to read either "The Major Transitions in Evolution" or "The Origin of Life" (both by John Maynard Smith and Eors Szathmary) and pay especial attention to the last three chapters or so. (Reading just those chapters is no substitute!)

Then come back and try us again.

I'd love to hear what you say then.
