Emergency exits on planes

In buildings, fire exits are marked in green, presumably because red indicates danger.

In safety briefings on planes, however, we are told that “white lights lead to red lights, which indicate the exits.”

Would it not be safer to have the white lights leading to green lights?

In a panic situation my normal reaction might be to avoid anything red.

The emergency exit color standard changes in different places.

In New York City all the emergency exit signs are red.
