People seem easier to lift if they're rigid. Why?

When I lift my wife for a good hug, her weight seems vastly different depending on whether she's limp or rigid. Is there anything real about the difference or is it my imagination that she seems much lighter (or certainly much easier to lift) when she's rigid? I noticed the same thing a few years back when I used to carry my kids to bed.

Clearly your wife's weight does not change depending on how rigid she is. This phenomenon is well-known to protesters - it takes more policemen to carry away a floppy, limp body than a stiff one. (I suppose you can't be charged with resisting arrest either, but that's a digression).

The main difference must be the shifting centre of gravity caused by a body that changes shape as you move it. Limbs, head and torso all flop around in different directions and make it very difficult to balance. You also have very little to "grab" because a person has no handles - this means that she slides through your grasp very easily.
