Any body orbiting another under the force of gravity moves in an ellipse. That is one of Kepler's laws.

However, a circle is a special case of an ellipse, when the eccentricity is zero and the two foci (focusses) are at the same point. So an orbit can be perfectly circular, and still be an ellipse - just a fairly special one.
