What (on Earth?) makes footprints like this?

These photos were taken in my parent's garden, Gloucestershire, during the snowy weather in January earlier this year.

The first photo shows the footprints starting near to the back door of their house, the second shows them making their way past the side of the house in a very straight line and the final photo shows them simply stopping.

We're still all very puzzled and wondered if anyone had any theories or ideas?

This looks like a case for Sherlock Holmes. I fear that you'd need to provide more information before an answer will be forthcoming. Do you have photos of the print itself?

Perhaps you are assuming that each depression in the snow is just one footprint?  I think it is four prints and a belly--from a hopping rabbit.  I note that the start and end of each depression is a little deeper than the middle.

Perhaps the bunny was attracted to that object nearby--it looks like a knife without a blade whose handle is missing.

Hi, I'm not sure what object you are referring to - if it's the yellow looking thing in the 2nd photograph then that is the corner of the house.  The tennis court in the background is good to show the size of the prints: each one looks about as long as the door to the court (just over 1m long).

There is not any detail of a single print and the prints are not fresh. However, my guess would be a rabit.

The photographs were taken early in the morning after a night of snow so the prints were pretty fresh, no more than 8 hours old.
