Birdwatchers will tell you of many species that feed in "mixed flocks". When birds exploit similar niches they can frequently be seen together. Waders spring to mind. Finches in winter often feed in large mixed groups.

When frightened they might fly off together, but generally this is where their differences will become more obvious.
