Cordless antistatic wrist strap

I recently saw for sale (from China) cordless anti-static wrist straps.  Apparently you just slip the bracelet on - no grounding required - and any static charge you might have disappears.  How on earth do they work?

Please read the question carefully - the asker is talking about CORDLESS wrist straps - which as we all know (OK, at least those working in Electronics!) are a myth...

These are an excellent application of modern technology to the fact that there are enough people in the electronic field who have enough money and little enough sense to buy turtle teeth from anyone with the cheek to sell them. I bet you I could compose an ad that would get me plenty of Cash With Order responses if I offered magnetic turtle teeth with magical navigational properties.

Guaranteed to work as well as these cordless earths!

Well, maybe not quite as well. The real function of the wrist straps is to remove money from your pocket, and I am not sure that my turtle teeth could compete. <snff>

A 'cordless' wrist strap to vent static buildup would be quite feasible (though not recommended). It's still possible (though not recommended) to buy 'Anti-static' brushes for vinyl records which are based around small quantities of Polonium 210. Through radioactive decay, they emit alpha particles which ionise the air, providing discharge routes for static. It used to be possible to buy lightning conductors based on the same principle.
