Can anyone identify this insect found in my kitchen? It appears to have fixed wings growing out of its head

Probably a cockroach, but I don't see the picture, and I don't know where you live. Try again please!

Really! Imagine suggesting someone has cockroaches in their kitchen without even seeing a picture.

cfossey - you'd better get a photo up asap to settle the matter. Even if it is a cockroach, you may want to know in advance that it's often a matter of bad luck rather than bad hygiene if you get an infestation.

Well Pete, the "wings" growing out of the head sound to me rather like the lateral extensions of the pronotum that one finds in many cockroaches. The trouble is that non-entomologists can be startlingly creative in their descriptions of unfamiliar anatomy, leaving literal-minded specimens like myself floundering.
