Why does he sneeze?

I work in and underground mine here in Australia.  One of my co-workers sneezes whenever he drives out of the entrance to the mine.  Shortly after we travel from the darkness of the underground mine and into bright sunlight.  He's been here for 22 years and says that it happens every time.  Why?

This is known as the photic sneeze reflex.

It is inhereted in an autosomal dominant fashion. As there is very little room inside the average persons head lots of nerves come into close proximity to each other. In the case of photic sneeze reflex, this is most likely to be caused by the nerve responsable for sneezing being too close to the optical nerve. Any time the optical nerve tries to pass a strong signal (such as an intense light being experenced) the signal may jump to the sneezing nerve.

You could try asking if one of his parents has this same reflex. It is quite likley that is where he got it from.

It is also more common in some races than others. I think the initial research measured a high incidence in Danes, but I wouldn't swear to remembering that correctly - it may have been Swedes.

Thanks for that.  Certainly something I'd never heard of before.  I'll let him know, with special emphasis on the small amount of space in his head.

Not sure where his family is originally from, so I'll ask him that as well.
