Is Skipping by happy children common in all cultures or only in ours, and if so, why?

I've often noticed that when little children are happy, pleased, etc, they tend to skip in joy. Is this trait universal in all cultures, including primitive cultures. And if so, why?

I have lived in amny different places around the world and skipping does not appear to me to be cultural. I would have to say, though, that in general little girls skip and little boys run.

While I cannot speak for every country, organized skipping games are pretty widespread. See Francelia Butler's book "Skipping around the World"
