radiating part of  the mutual potential energy as gravitational

waves. The kinetic energy of the two black holes just

before merger will add to the "spin" of the unified

black hole.

Such processes are one of the hypothetical sources of

gravitational waves which hopefully will be sensed by

some detectors in operation.
