I assume (being not a "dedicated follower" of strings) they got it

from the same source as e. g. hydrogen molecules get the

genergy to vibrate or any atom gets  in order not to collapse. 

I recommend You google for "zero point energy", "rest energy" and "Heisenbergs Principle"
