How difficult is it to change peoples perception of you.

How difficult is it to change people’s perception of you, I ask from a species point of view not a personal point of view although I do seem to have this trait.......

Once a perception of you is formed in a person’s brain is it possible for this to change.

example........ i meet someone form an opinion and its stuck, it makes no difference if i was wrong, the initial thought has been stored, is this a survival trait or is it just me....

On a personal level my work colleagues think I am a mean, grumpy old fart, but my friends know me as a generous, outgoing life of the party type. Do we sub consciously create perceptions based on the situation we found ourselves in.

Cheers Georg for your insight.......I think the question may have come across slightly wrong......I was purely inquiring if our brains have evolved to take on this trait as a defence mechanism, we all know that our gut reaction to something is 9 times out of 10 correct and i believe this is a survival trait.....i also understand that we make judgments about people within 10 seconds of meeting them, this has to be fight or flight reaction or some kind of mechanism to protect our off spring.....Cave man stuff i suppose, so to ask how difficult it is to change perception is not a Dear Deidre type question.......

It's hard to change people's minds on any subject.

"When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?"

Unfortunately, most people are reluctant to base their first opinion on facts, so they certainly won't let any facts alter their opinion. Is this a survival trait? I would say not. A reluctance to unlearn things seems an odd way to improve your survival chances, but I suppose it might make it easier for organisms with limited intellect to keep things ordered in their minds.

As for your office colleagues.... can I suggest that you start wearing jolly ties to work, gradually phase in embroidered waistcoats, buy fancy biscuits for the tea break and learn a few new jokes each night to help them see your humorous side?
