Why does the colour of facial hair appear to change during the growth of a beard?

When I grow a beard, ginger and grey facial hairs start to appear amongst my usual dark coloured hairs, but only after about a week or so of growth.  Is this a case of the original hairs changing colour (or appearing to change colour) over time, or is there some reason why the ginger and grey coloured hairs appear to start growing at a later stage in the life of my beard?  Any suggestions gratefully received.

I have a now mostly gray (and brown beard.) My admittedly rough empirical view is that the gray hairs grow more quickly. If I trim the topmost layer, the beard appears browner. I do not think that this is wholly due to the gray hairs being stiffer (thicker?) and therefore stand above the brown hairs.

My simplistic idea is that now that the gray hair root does not have to produce melanin it devotes those nutrients/energy to faster hair growth.

As I have only shaved for 3 months of my life I can not answer your question more fully.

It may be due to a semi transparent layer (sheath or cortex)(in some hairs) that transmits skin colour only after some tapering due to wear.

As the hair is being formed, melanocytes inject melanin into cells containing the keratin which makes up our hair, skin, and nails. There are only two different melanin pigments and these mix together to make up a range of colours but importantly this happens as the hair is formed. There are a number of things that can subtly alter hair colour beyond this point such as sunlight(which can make it fairer) but I would be very surprised if this was anything but a case of not being able to see blonde stubble. Short of trawling out your stubble with tweezers -ouch- I can't think of another way to test this.
