Why are there different types of sneezes?

Why is it that if I am eating and can feel a sneeze coming I can often tell if I'm going to spray food everywhere or manage to keep my mouth closed?

Jon-Richfield says:

I don't know.

It is a fact however, that a sneeze is a complex process, a sequence of reflex actions that need to be integrated if the sneeze is to come off at all. Any interruption in the sequence, such as an inhalation at the wrong moment, can leave you with a hung sneeze or at best a delayed or ineffective snort. Conversely, if all the component moves combine just right, you can blow the head off a glass of beer two pubs down the road.

Too bad if you happen to be hoping to keep your false teeth or a mouthful of food to yourself though!
