Is this forum still maintained?

Does somebody from "New Scientist" still look after this pages?

It is now about 4 weeks since the "latest questions" on home page

were  renewed the last time.

I don't know what the arrangements are; I simply log into the advanced search page for the last week, and sort the output by date. That way I don't miss anything and I don't waste so much time negotiating the front page.

Hello Jon,

click on some "tag" on the home page, then on the "RSS" in the line

"Be informed on updates to this list by e-mail or RSS"

I'm with Georg - I just open the RSS in my browser and read downwards till I get to familiar territory.

I play a wee game with myself sometimes: recognize the writer from his/her prose-style.

It's a shame that this forum (so good in so many ways) raises so many complaints. I don't mean I disagree with thye complaints - they are all thoroughly justified.

PS Even the RSS is frustrating because if the conversation has been threaded it is possible to see a message in the RSS and not in the main site.

Fairly obvious really. Jon has now answered all possible science questions.

I can't find the quote, but somwhere around 1898, a famous and reputable physicist said (possibly just after the discovery of the electron) "In six months Physics will be complete".

Pah! Jon's not allowed to retire till he answers my question about the Gulf of Thailand.

And someone's going to ask what happens if they dig through the Earth and out the other side within the next day or two. That always livens things up around here.

Be fair, Pete. You know in February I get to decide what shape the Earth is, because it's my birthday.

In February 2011, I have decided the Earth's surface is a Klein bottle and is therefore unbounded and one-sided. So you can't go through it - you would just see your own feet disappearing into the same hole you are emerging from. Fortunately for the people who keep carping on about infinite luminousity and rotating long sticks, a Klein bottle has zero volume, although below is a site that will sell you a large or small Klein bottle, both of zero volume.

They will even do you a Klein Wooly Hat, or for beer drinkers, a Klein Stein.
