Why do less people get colds when it's really cold?

I wouldn't hesitate and I would want to fight over it. Colds are viral! Secondary infections are generally bacterial, but that is no more justification for calling colds bacterial than calling the "bang" the function of a rifle, just because the sound of a rifle shot might cause someone to die of fright.
