Why does it seem easier cycling up a steep hill than running up it, despite having to take the weight of the bike up with you?

Is this true no matter how steep the hill is? Which uses more calories?

This would depend I imagine on the gear ratio used. With a gear ratio of 1:1 I would expect the effort to be greater due to friction and the weight of the bike. As gearing is increased the force required is reduced at the cost of more "steps" the same effect as flattening the hill :-)
