Ant Bull-ying

I recently heard that when a Bull ant is cut in half, each half fights each other. The head bites the tail and the tail stings the head, for up to 30 minutes, until one of the halves dies. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

How many termites fill up a swallow?

The South African highveld gets its summer rain in thundershowers.  The evening following a good shower sees thousands of termites flying off to start new colonies in the soft ground.  This attracts swarms of swallows.  The swallows seem to keep hunting until the termites stop flying.  So how many termites does each swallow then eat?  If they are skilled hunters (which I believe they are), they must be able to catch many more termites than what I would think fits into a swallow's stomach - especially if it wants to keep flying!

Why do cats follow people into the bathroom?

I have a six month old ginger kitten who gets very anxious if the bathroom door is closed on him. He'll take any opportunity to follow me in, whether I'm washing, brushing my teeth, or, um, using the loo (when I'd prefer to keep him out!) My first thought was that he wanted a drink, but he has easy access to water in the kitchen, and he never drinks while in the bathroom with me. He'll follow me right out again afterwards, and if I do manage to keep him on the outside, he meows pitifully at the door until it's opened.

He doesn't much like other doors being closed, but it's when people go into the bathroom that he gets worried or annoyed (or so it seems to me!)

When I mention my kitten's habit to people, many report that their cats have a tendency to follow then into the bathroom too, even if they are not inclined to follow humans around otherwise.

Apparently it's normal cat behaviour, but I'd quite like to find out why!

Why are baby forest dormice falling out of a nest in a roof?

We recently bought a house in northern italy and have forest dormice nesting in the roof.  Every summer we find 4 or 5 dead and dying babies lying on the ground.  They haven't yet got fur so must be very young. Are they falling from the nest or have they been ejected?

Do dogs have names for each other?

Dogs seem to understand the concept of 'names' more than other animals.  My dogs know the names of the cats and recognise their own names.  Does this mean that they have a similar system themselves or merely associate the sound with the image?

I can understand how sound + image works in the case of the cats names for example, not sure how it would be applied to their own name though.

Why do animals sleep at night?

I don't see the benefit of sleeping at night in the wild, especially since this is when the animal is most vulnerable...
