Do or can plants die suddenly like humans? Alive one minute then dead the next?

Obviously if they fall in a fire they will die suddenly, but just sat in the ground minding their own business can they suddenly die?

Why do some plants such as carrots, parsnips and sugar beet (biennials) store food one year and fruit the next ?

The energy to make the food store could go directly to making fruit or seeds. Then there would be twice as many reproductions.  The same question applies to potatoes.

What is this; found at waters edge, low tide February, Thornham Norfolk UK?

It was about 300 mm long. One shot shows it cut open. If it is a plant, it was not obvious which was the attached end.
