Why is it that after two days off from swimming training that when I return to the pool I feel really unfit, sore and tired?

I train 10 times a week as a competitive swimmer but I have thee weekend off. When I return on a Monday Morning I feel really bad. I also build up a lot of lactic acid during the week in the pool as I am quite muscular.

Why is it? and could someone suggest some ways of helping me? thanks.
