What effect does staring have on your eyesight?

Whenever I stare at glow-in-the-dark objects in the dark they glow but the longer I keep my eyes open for the more that fades until it becomes completely invisible. Despite this as soon as I blink I can see the object again, glowing as though nothing happened. Is it just my eyes or does staring affect my vision?

Is it possible to test for tetrachromatic vision on a trichromatic display?

I read about the possibility of people having tetrachromacy and would like to know if a test similar to a Ishihara is possible on a standard RGB display.

Why does one green traffic light flicker when looked at indirectly?

There are several sets of pedestrian lights in Porthmadog . One green light flickers with a steady and definite pulse but only when I look a few feet to one side , when I look at it directly it is perfectly normal. It can only be because of where the image hits the retina , but why?

Perception of flickering LEDs when moving eyes

Many modern cars use high brightness LEDs for their rear lights. They tend to be rapidly switched on and off for 'normal intensity' and fully on for 'high intensity' when the brakes are also applied. When driving behind these cars I find the LED lights very distracting - whenever I move my eyes from one spot to another the lights appear to leave a trail of very bright dots caused by their rapid switching. Normal incandescent bulbs do not look like this, nor do the LED car lights when they at full intensity. Domestic items with LED displays also tend to do the same thing (I noticed it on a washing machine today). I also see it to a lesser extent with fluorescent lights.

My daughter also sees the flickering car lights when moving her eyes, but my son does not, and neither do other people I've asked. I understand why LEDs are rapidly switched in this way, and why they appear as a string of dots when I move my eyes - my question is why do some people apparently not see the effect? Is our perception somehow different? I have read reports that the brain 'switches off' visual processing when the eyes are flicked from one point to another - could this 'switching off' vary from one person to another?

What do I see when my eyes are closed?

When I close my eyes in a dark room, I don't see black.

More interestingly, I'm sometimes aware of seeing patterns. I might see expanding or contracting pools of orange-yellow (reminiscent of a BZ reaction in a petrie dish), but I don't see black.

So, what do I see when my eyes closed?

Short-sighted reflection: why do distant objects appear blurry in mirrors when the mirror itself is in clear sight?

I wear glasses to correct my long distance vision.  Without them anything more than a metre of so away is blurry.  I can see objects close to me clearly without my glasses.

If I hold a mirror I can see the reflection of close objects (such as my face) clearly.  The reflection of distant objects is blurry.

Why is this so?  To my way of thinking, I am focusing on the mirror which is within the range I see objects clearly.
