I heard the car is the deadliest weapon created by humans and that the number of lives it has claimed exceeds the death toll from atomic weapons, guns or bombing. Is this true? And what are the grisly figures involved?Thomas Elling, London, UK
Twice, when donating blood platelets to the Red Cross, I've started sneezing uncontrollably. Assistants respond immediately by giving me Tums, a brand of antacid indigestion tablet. Their explanation is that Tums restores my calcium balance.I understand how my calcium could get out of whack when my blood is being removed, filtered and given back to me without platelets, but what does this have to do with sneezing?Heather Hallen, East Lansing, Michigan, US
When I was younger, my mum used to drive us past a field with a horse in it. There was a sign that read: "This horse is not dead, he sleeps that way." Indeed, sometimes the horse was lying on its back with its legs locked straight up in the air.How unusual was this behaviour and why or how did the horse learn to sleep that way?Rosemary Bell, Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK(Image: balckfrog, stock.xchng)
I live a kilometre north of a busy motorway. When the wind is coming from the south the noise of the motorway is noticeably greater than when the wind is coming from the north.Assuming a wind speed of a mere 30 kilometres per hour, how can the wind direction affect the level of traffic noise I hear when the speed of sound is more than 1235 kilometres per hour?Jim Turton, by email, no address supplied
When I lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, I played badminton and squash. The reduced air resistance at 2600 metres altitude makes a perceptible difference to the flight of a shuttlecock: it travels much further.Should there also be a noticeable difference to the flight of a squash ball? If there is an effect it is less noticeable, but my squash partners and I would like to think that it exists, rather than admit age and a lack of fitness are slowing us down?Mark Harvey, London, UK(Image: a_kartha, stock.xchng)

When I took the cover off my picnic table's sun umbrella I found a number of these structures running down one of the folds (see Photo, left). They look like they are made of dried mud and inside each one is a vivid yellow powder and a single thin, curled-up larva. Each structure was about 5 centimetres long. What did it, how did it do it, how long did it take - and should I get rid of them?Ian Gilbert, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, UK
My partner recently brought home a large snapper that was caught off the coast of Adelaide, South Australia. When we had finished devouring the delicious fish I noticed that the skeleton had some unusual deformities on the backbone (see photos) in the form of three hard, bony spheres. My partner claims not to have seen anything like it before, and my rudimentary internet search produced no pictures of fish skeletons with similar features. Can someone tell whether these are a normal part of the snapper morphology or an abnormality?Tegan Laslett, Adelaide, South Australia
