Do lullabies really work?

If babies are really sent to sleep by a lullaby then can this be used for adult insomniacs?

Do baby booms coincide with recessions?

In a news story this this morning I noticed that the UK population is growing at its fastest rate since 1973, a period of severe economic distress. Is there any evidence or studies that show that there is a relationship?

The usual explanation I see is that people stay in more during a recession, but this seems over simplistic.

I wondered if there was maybe a feedback/tipping point effect, so that once a certain percentage of people are expecting, there is suddenly a rapid increase; or if the population reacts as a whole in periods of distress by increasing birth rates?

How to have a girl

Can your readers please settle an argument with my husband and myself? I have read that to increase the chances of having a baby girl, it is best to try to conceive 2-3 days before ovulation. Or that if you concieve on the day of, or the day before, then chances are higher to conceive a boy. Apparently it has something to do with the female producing sperm having a higher longevity in the birth canal and if you have sex 2-3 days before the egg appears then the "last ones standing" so to speak should create a girl embryo. Is there any truth in this as my hubby thinks its bollocks and all down to chance.

Why do newborns/infants smell nice?

My daughter is nearly 4 weeks old and she has that 'new baby smell' which my wife and I find absolutely lovely. We have so far only bathed her in clean water (no baby-wash or soap) and have only used lotion a couple of times when she's had dry skin, so her smell is all her own. Is this some sort of evolutionary device to encourage us to take care of her? Would other people find our baby's smell as lovely?
