Why do some birds walk and some hop?

If birds are the descendants of dinosaurs, did some dinosaurs hop, or have some birds lost the ability to walk?

How big would a pair of wings have to be in order to allow a human to fly? And how often would they have to flap?

While I'm sure personal human flight is much easier through fixed wings and some sort of rocket or jet propellant, however, these are not nearly as cool as a nice set of wings like a bird. I know humans are much bigger and heavier than any flying species of bird and are therefore not naturally built for flight at all. But surely this isn't beyond the capabilites of humans?

Can anyone identify what type of birds these are?

I recently bought my Mum a card for her Birthday with some birds on the front as shown in the picture.  The card is called 'Halcyon Days' but the birds do not appear to be of any Kingfisher that I can find from seaching in the well known search engine.  Please can someone identify what birds they are or have they been 'photoshopped' to be orange?

Night Owls

Recently I've been up late at night and have noticed something rather strange about the birds in my area: they will continuously sing from about 11pm until 3am, possibly even later. At this time of year (middle of January), it won't be fully bright until about 7 or 8, getting dark at 5 or 6 in the evening. What is their reason for doing this? I live relatively close to the centre of Dublin. Is light pollution an issue?

Why do birds sometimes fly in circles for no apparent reason?

Today I watched for 10 minutes a flock of pigeons flying round the domes of a mosque across the road. There were other pigeons sat on one of the domes, and occasionally some of these would join the flock while some of the flyers would settle on the dome. There was no haste in the flying, so they couldn't have been chasing insects, no aggression, so there was no conflict between birds, so what were they doing?

I know swallows flock and fly around before 'going to bed' at night, but this was in the middle of the day and featured common pigeons.

Do all bird species do this 'orbiting' of landing spots and if so why?
