My friend is the goal keeper of our hockey team, and she was hit by a very fast ball between her pads, right in the middle of her thigh. This developed into a fairly spectacular (and quite interesting) bruise, with normal coloured (but very painful) circular patch skin in the centre where the ball had actually hit, and multi-coloured bruising all the way round. What is the explanation behind this 'hole' in the bruise?
